As someone who has just snapped your car key in half, getting a replacement car key as soon as possible is on the top of your to-do list. However, before you find a friend or family member who can drive you down to the dealership, consider these two reasons why you are better off calling an auto locksmith instead.

Convenience to you is the number one factor why an auto locksmith should be called. There is more one reason why this option is more convenient.

  1. Many auto locksmiths offer a mobile service. Since they can come to you, you don't have to hunt down a friend to drive you to the car dealership.
  2. Many auto locksmiths offer a 24/7 service. This means you can get help when you are locked out of your car at 2am, rather than having to wait for the dealership to open.
  3. There is no guarantee the dealership will have your car key in stock. If they don't, you will have to wait for a replacement key to be shipped out. Locksmiths, however, carry a wide variety of keys since keys and locks are their business focus.

Along with the convenience factor of getting a key from an auto locksmith at a time and place that suits you best, there is also the cost component to bear in mind. For each car on their test list, Choice employees purchased a key from a dealership and a key from a locksmith. In the results published, the keys purchased from the locksmith were cheaper than the one purchased from the dealership. Considering that purchasing a new car key is going to set you back a couple hundred dollars anyway, you don't really want to pay more for it than you really have to.
